Pets are a joy to have as part of the family, but they can be very destructive to carpets and upholstery if these are not properly cleaned on a regular basis. A regular basis does not have to be every month, but it should be as frequent as possible to maximize the appearance of your carpets and upholstery.

It’s best to avoid buying chenille, wool, tweed, and silk items. These will make damage, stains, and hair much more visible. Velvet upholstery can be more effective for cat owners because the lack of looping fabric will prevent damage caused by kneading and clawing.
Now, pet hair and dander are inevitable when one welcomes a new furry family member to their house hold. There are some pets that do not shed much and what they lack in hair make up for in producing pet dander (microscopic dead skin flakes). Both end up in the upholstery and in the carpet. Vacuuming a couple times a week is a good defense against shedding pets, but ultimately it won’t be enough to remove all the allergens and smells pets will leave behind.
The best defense against pet stains and odors is being attentive and treating pet stains as soon as they happen.
These are quick and easy actions one can take their self if an accident occurs:
- If one catches a pet in the act, quickly grab a clean washcloth and start blotting up as much of the moisture as possible, then mix 1/4 teaspoon of liquid dish soap and 1 cup of water and blot it onto the affected area with a clean washcloth.
- Next, blot the stain with a dry washcloth to soak up the cleaning solution along with the stain.
- Continue to process until you’re satisfied. To finish off, blot the area with cold water and then a dry washcloth.
